The Holidays....A Time to Clean!

Now the Halloween has passed everyone has their focus on the winter holidays.  Decorating, shopping, wrapping, cooking and the dreaded cleaning.  For some people the worst part about the holiday season is having to clean your home to open your doors to your loved ones over the next few months.  If you are anything like me you keep a tidy house and straighten up once a week, keep up with the necessary annual deep cleaning when you can and try your best to make sure everything has a hiding spot if needed!  Over the last few years however, I’ve tried to plan out my cleaning so the I can get everything done and not be so stressed out over every room getting done. The tips and tricks I’m going to share with you here and with a little help from SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties you can have your stress down and your home looking great in no time!

First, think about the layout of your house and group together rooms that have similar uses.  I usually do my groups as:

  1. Kitchen/Dining Room/Pantry
  2. Living Room/Den
  3. Bathrooms
  4. Bedrooms/Closets
  5. Extra Rooms as needed

Then take a little walk around my house and look at each room to see what room(s) will take the longest to clean and start there.  I put my list in order starting with the rooms that will take me the longest down to the rooms that will be easier at the end.  I usually end up starting in my bedroom and ending in the bathrooms.  The goal here is to try to tackle one area each week until it’s time for that first holiday gathering.  Not only will this help you to declutter and deep clean your house it will also help you to get rid of anything that you don’t need anymore to make room for any new items you might be gifted or if you're like me gifts to yourself too!

Starting with the bedroom and closets and all of those clothes that you probably haven't worn in months.  Go through your closet and throw away the things that don't fit, you haven't worn, you forgot you had or that are worn and need to be replaced.  Clean out your shoes, purses, bags, and clothes this way and get rid of the items that can’t be worn anymore and donate the items to local charities or non-profits that can be used again.  This is usually the most time consuming part of cleaning but it is also the most rewarding when you see how much stuff you don’t need taking up space inside your home.  I donated 13 garbage bags, yes 13 garbage bags of clothes, purses, and accessories to the Salvation Army last winter and I never realized how big my tiny closet actually was. Next go through and clean each area of the room by dusting, tossing, and organizing everything that you may have in your bedroom or the bedrooms throughout your home.  I like to take everything that doesn’t have a home and throw it in the middle of the floor as I go and then once I’ve decluttered I realize that all of these things have somewhere to go!  This is also a great time to reorganize or redecorate the bedrooms in your home.

Now that you’ve tackled the hardest rooms you can work your way down your list and do the same in each room.  Declutter, dust, reorganize, rearrange, and get rid of those things you don’t use or need anymore.  Once you get to the end of your list you will feel so great about getting through the worst rooms that the light cleaning will seem like nothing!  I also like to do it this way because I find myself getting busier and busier as the days count down to the holiday that I run out of time to devote to my cleaning.  I have found that tackling the areas that will take the longest to clean makes it easier to fit in the other areas of your home as you get busier closer to the holidays. You can squeeze in a bathroom before you jump in the shower to do your last minute shopping.  If you go through your home and clean a little at a time when your family and friends arrive to celebrate the holidays you can do a quick wipe down of the whole house and everything is looking great.  

The final item on your list should be having your carpets cleaning professionally. This is an important step that most people don’t think about because as you dust and move things around most of those particles are going onto your carpeting.  Although this is something you may not visibly see it is important to take care of annually to not only improve the life of your carpeting but to also improve the air quality within your home.
