Busted Water Line

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded conference room The after effects of a burst water line which ran for several hours causing the entire floor to flood.

Pictured is the after effect of a broken water line which unfortunately ran for several hours before the it could be shut off. The water was so extensive that the entire building flooded.

As you can see the carpet is literally becoming unglued from the water. Even after extraction, the carpet was too badly damaged to save and will need to be replaced. It sort of looks like waves from the ocean.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was able to triage the building overnight and continued the following day. The carpet was removed, drying equipment placed and walls dried. The occupants were displaced for a few days but returned to a safe dry work area. Long hours and hard work led to another satisficed customer.

Weekend Commercial Water Damage

1/17/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded Parking Garage Water seeks its lowest level so in this case a second floor pipe break leads to a flooded underground parking garage.

It was an extremely busy weekend for our water damage clean up technicians. The extreme cold played havoc on water pipes throughout Wayne and Lackawanna Counties.

The crews were dispatched to a Scranton office building were a second floor pipe in a mechanical room broke in the overnight when the building was unoccupied. The water flowed for several hours before being discovered causing damage on three floors. An underground parking garage was like a lake.

The SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties water certified restoration technicians led by a IICRC crew chief inspected the areas for safety and began the drying out process by extracting the standing water and wet carpets before setting up equipment to facilitate the drying. They worked a long day in cold temperatures to ensure the building could open the following day. Limiting business interruption is a key goal of ours. Mission accomplished.

Puff Backs

1/12/2022 (Permalink)

Soot from a puff back This home experienced a puff back. You can clearly see the soot on the hallway carpet.

Furnace malfunctions are unfortunately all too common this time of year. Even with regular maintenance (which is highly recommended) malfunctions occur. One common fiasco is called a puff back. A puff back occurs when an oil burner doesn't ignite right away and as a consequence fumes build up in the furnace. The fumes cause an explosion inside the burner chamber, which vaporizes and expels soot throughout a home or business, covering walls, baseboards, furniture and floors in oily toxic soot.

Cleaning the soot requires professional care. If attempted without the proper tools, the oil can get smeared and embedded into the surface. Too many times SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was contracted after the homeowner attempted to self-clean and made a bad situation worse. Do not attempt to clean a puff back. Call a professional restoration company to limit damage and restore the property to pre-damage condition.

Space Heater Danger

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

With the winter upon us here in Northeastern Pennsylvania staying warm is a priority. However, the warmer we stay, the more we pay. Therefore looking to alternate forms of heating is common place. Things like space heaters are used to supplement our main heating systems. We all are looking for ways to save money. Lets face it, whether it be oil, natural gas or electric; all can be expensive this time of the year.

While space heaters certainly can help, they also come with an inherent fire risk. Each year they are responsible for numerous fires causing substantial damage. Recently we all learned about the tragic NYC apartment fire which took 19 lives. The cause of this was a space heater. The link below is to a WBRE story regarding space heater safety. Definitely worth a quick view.

Storms: The Unpredictable Enemy

1/9/2022 (Permalink)

Depending upon the region of the country you reside in can dictate what type of weather you experience. Here in the northeast we come to expect freezing temperatures which brings snow sleet and ice. The spring and summer seasons can be rainy. All of these weather phenomonins bring their own hazards to home and business owners.

Rain can lead to flooding. Snow and ice play havoc on roofs. Freezing temperatures cause frozen and burst pipes which leads to water damage. None of these scenarios are good but unfortunately occur. The unpredictable nature of storms are a reason to maintain a relationship with a local clean up and restoration company like SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties. Knowing who to call when a disaster happens leads to quicker service which reduces both any potential secondary damage and limits any business interruption.

Storms will happen; are you prepared?

Furnace Malfunction

1/9/2022 (Permalink)

Second floor water damage This is the downstairs celling from a second floor water loss. As you can see the damage was extensive.

Winter time is always a busy time for cleanup and restoration companies. Frozen and burst pipes, along with taxed heating systems produce the potential to cause major smoke, fire and water disasters.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was recently called to a home in Honesdale due to a furnace malfunction. The furnaces water shut off valve stopped working causing water to continually run overfilling it and eventually flooding the two story home. Water was escaping from every radiator in the home.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties were called to help the homeowner restore the property. Although extensive demolition was required, we were able to restore the property back to preloss condition.

From dry-out to re-build, SERVPRO was there to help.

Commercial Large Loss

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Any disaster can be devastating. Whether it be to a home or a commercial property. However, commercial smoke, fire and water damage is often extensive simply because of the size of some of the building. Multiple floors and/or multiple units can create a challenge to any clean up company.

So what makes SERVPRO the premier commercial large loss restoration company? Well put simply its the training we receive and the ability to call upon other franchise for additional labor or our corporate large loss teams.

On many losses we have the capability to call upon a neighboring franchise for support. The benefit here is that we are using trained personnel instead of temporary laborers. Having IICRC certified crew chiefs ensures proper drying and cleaning techniques.

Our large loss commercial teams specialize in extreme disasters and storm issues. They roll in the tractor trailers full of drying and cleaning equipment which many companies do not have the luxury of.

If your commercial property experiences a disaster, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Carbondale/Clarks Summit/Old Forge to limit business interruption and ensure proper restoration.

Winter Fire Hazards

Gutted basement following a broken pipe The after affects of water damage. The basement of this home had to be gutted in order to ensure proper drying. Be pro-active and wrap your water pipe

Not surprisingly the winter season is a busy time for restoration companies. Cold weather causing frozen and broken water pipes, heating equipment malfunctioning causing smoke, soot and fire damage, over worked electrical systems are common this time of year.

While SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties is here to serve our local Wayne and Lackawanna counties community we would like for everyone to be pro-active and take preventive steps to avoid these disasters.

One step which should be taken is to have your heating system serviced by a professional HVAC company. Changing boiler filters and making sure the chimney is clean are other simple steps that can be completed.

Wrapping water pipes, letting the sink drip and ensuring your heat does not go below 55 degrees are simple steps to avoid a water disaster. Water damage is as devastating as a fire so we certainly want to avoid it.

All this being said, disasters will occur and when they do know SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties is available 24/7/365 to help.

Creative Drying Techniques

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Tenting One example of the many techniques we use in the drying process.

A recent upstairs bathroom water leak compromised this beautiful hardwood floor at a home in Scranton, PA. SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties created a floor drying system in order to save the hardwood. By tenting the floor we are able to extract the moisture from the wood by using air movers and dehumidifiers. Repairing/saving instead of replacing damaged flooring not only saves money but also the integrity of the home.
If your home or business experiences water damage which requires professional mitigation, call the Scranton area's leader in smoke, fire and water cleanup. Creative drying is just one reason to call SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties to call us at (570) 235-1646. We help make it "Like it never even happened."

When Lightning Strikes

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

lightning Severe storms can cause major damage to a home.

Severe weather can happen anytime and anywhere. SERVPRO recently got called to a house fire that resulted from a lightning strike. Its important to know what you can do to protect yourself. Below are some helpful tips to know in the event of severe thunderstorms.

Safety Tips from https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/features/lightning-safety/index.html

Protect Yourself from Lightning Strikes

Safety precautions outdoors

You can protect yourself from risk even if you are caught outdoors when lightning is close by.

  • If the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity.
  • Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors. Find a safe, enclosed shelter. Safe shelters include homes, offices, shopping centers, and hard-top vehicles with the windows rolled up.
  • Don’t forget the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
  • If you are caught in an open area, act quickly to find adequate shelter. The most important action is to remove yourself from danger. Crouching or getting low to the ground can reduce your chances of being struck but does not remove you from danger. If you are caught outside with no safe shelter nearby, the following actions may reduce your risk:
    • Immediately get off elevated areas such as hills, mountain ridges, or peaks.
    • Never lie flat on the ground. Crouch down in a ball-like position with your head tucked and hands over your ears so that you are down low with minimal contact with the ground.
    • Never shelter under an isolated tree.
    • Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.
    • Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.
    • Stay away from objects that conduct electricity (such as barbed wire fences, power lines, or windmills).
  • Stay away from concrete floors or walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Safety precautions indoors

Being indoors does not automatically protect you from lightning. In fact, about one-third of lightning-strike injuries occur indoors. Here are some tips to keep safe and reduce your risk of being struck by lightning while indoors.

  • Avoid contact with water during a thunderstorm. Do NOT bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any other contact with water during a thunderstorm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
  • Avoid using electronic equipment of all types. Lightning can travel through electrical systems and radio and television reception systems.
  • Avoid using corded phones. Corded phones are NOT safe to use during a thunderstorm. However, cordless or cellular phones are safe to use during a storm.
  • Avoid concrete floors and walls. Do NOT lie on concrete floors during a thunderstorm. Also, avoid leaning on concrete walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.

Hopefully these tips come in handy and protect you if lightening strikes in or around your home. If you do experience damage from severe weather, call the professionals at 570-235-1646. SERVPRO is always “here to help”.

Effects of Soot

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

soot This soot damaged room was caused by long-term candle use. Soot can be a stubborn substance to clean requiring specialized cleaning agents.

We recently received a call from a Honesdale homeowner who had soot damage in a bedroom from long term candle use. They attempted to clean the soot from the walls and ceiling but, because they did not have the specialized cleaning agents and a soot sponge that are required, unfortunately they made it worse. This attempt only embedded the soot into the sheet rock instead of cleaning/removing it.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties using chemical sponges and SERVPRO brand cleaning agents was able to successful remove the soot from the bedroom walls and ceilings. We then sealed the surface to ensure the soot did not bleed through before we painted the room.

With one call this homeowner was able to restore the bedroom back to pre-damage condition. SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties is a 24-hour emergency service company that specializes in this type of fire damage.

Kitchen Fires

fire Kitchen fire in Scranton

Kitchen fires remain as the leading cause of home fires. This kitchen fire in an apartment complex in Scranton was caused by the tenant leaving the stove unattended while cooking. Thankfully he was prepared and was able to extinguish the flames with an ABC rated fire extinguisher saving further damage.
While the flames caused significant damage in the kitchen area the rest of the apartment suffered smoke and soot damage and a top down clean using chemical sponges is required prior to sealing and painting. Protein/food fires are especially troublesome to clean and calls for a professional restoration company like SERVPRO.
SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was called by the property manager to restore the apartment and limited the loss of business interruption that the fire caused. Being Prepared in an Emergency is Key

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

Sprinkler damage Acting fast is a situation like this is key to recovery.

It only takes a few minutes for the devastating effects of a broken sprinkler line to cause havoc for any business. This water damage to a hotel occurred in less than 5 minutes and if it was not for the quick response of the employees, it would have been much worse.

This hotel had a SERVPRO emergency readiness plan (ERP) and the employees knew where and how to shut off the water. While there was certainly a disruption to the business, they were able to remain open and operate while SERVPRO did the rest. Partnerships which develop through ERPs allow for a better response from employees and allow a business to get back up and running faster. Speed to any emergency is the key and SERVPRO is faster to any disaster.

Positive partnerships are another reason SERVPRO is the area's leader in smoke, fire and water damage cleanup and restoration. We understand the need for an immediate response even when we are extremely inundated due to the weather. We pride ourselves on the emergency response and understand that any disruption to a business is problematic.

Storm Damage: The Importance of A Sump Pump

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

water damge A severe storm caused this basement to fill with water.

We have had some severe storms in the last several weeks. These storms brought some heavy rain which caused for major water losses for many in this area. When a severe storm hits, homeowners may experience excess water in their basements or the lower levels of their home. A sump pump is an important tool that can help protect your property by controlling water and keeping your home dry.
Sump pumps are typically found in the lowest part of a house, such as a basement, and are usually installed by a professional in a specially constructed sump pit. Its job is to pump water outside and away from the home. It is always good to make sure your pump is working properly.
It is also a good idea to obtain coverage for water backup or sump discharge or overflow. Many homeowners' policies do not cover water in the basement without this.
If your home or business does experience a water emergency, call the area’s premier water restoration company at (570) 235-1646. SERVPRO is an IICRC certified firm available 24/7 to serve you.

Ground Water

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Call us at 570-235-1646

Did you know that when water enters your home from an outside source, more times than not its classified as an uncovered loss. This means that the homeowner has to pay out of pocket for the costs of the water damage and sometimes that can be quite extensive.
If flooding is commonplace it is highly recommended that flood insurance be bought. It is usually not part of your typical homeowners policy and not everyone qualifies for it or can afford it. The worst jobs SERVPRO restoration technicians mitigate are these uncovered losses, knowing the individual has to pay for the repairs themselves.
Most policies do allow for a rider that will cover sewer and drain backup if the home has a sump pump. A sump pump failure is typically a covered loss and the premium is not prohibitive considering the downside. Sewer and drain backup is highly recommended.
SERVPRO has had several calls regarding flooded basements. We do our best to attend to each call in a timely fashion with the goal of making the home safe.
if you find your basement flooded, call the water restoration professionals at SERVPRO.

Specialty Cleaning

cleaning before and after Nicotine cleaning at an apartment building.

The nicotine in tobacco that stains skin and teeth also leaves the same stains on walls. Houses inhabited by smokers may have brown or yellow stains or streaks on the walls from years of cigarette smoke.

Due to changes in federal law many apartment complexes were required to go non-smoking but this brought a new problem, nicotine stained walls and ceilings. To make matters worse during federal inspections, property managers were also required to deal with these issues in order to meet requirements. Companies like SERVPRO have the specialized cleaning agents and expertise to address these issues.

As the area's leading specialty cleaning company, SERVPRO does more than just smoke, fire and water cleanup and restoration. Did you know that we can safely clean trauma and crime scenes? Sewer backups or any bio-hazard situation. Our motto is that if you don't want to or can't safely clean it...we can and will! SERVPRO is an emergency services company responding to disaster cleanups 24/7. Call us if your home or business has a situation which requires a specialty cleaning company at (570) 235-1646.

The Importance of a Drying Chamber

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

containment SERVPRO created a drying chamber at this water loss to assist with drying.

Having containment on a water damage job can assist in drying the structure quickly and thoroughly. This saves the customer in both downtime and costs.
Containment allows the restoration company to better control the drying environment. It will eliminate the unaffected parts of the structure from your drying chamber. This will help reduce the amount of drying equipment needed on a particular job and will also help speed up the drying process. Many types of materials are more difficult to dry, so a drying chamber helps in that type of situation.
SERVPRO created this drying chamber during a water damage claim. We strive to reduce business interruption while safely drying the structure.
If your home or business experiences water damage and needs professional mitigation, call the area's premier smoke, fire and water cleanup and restoration company at (570) 235-1646.

The Devastation of a House Fire

fire damage Damage from an electrical fire.

Fires are tragic. However when they occur around the holidays they become even more so. They disrupt the lives of homeowners, tenants and businesses and can causes thousands of dollars in damage.
One reason, that mitigating fire damage is so timely and costly is that usually there is smoke, soot and water damage resulting from the fire.
Smoke and soot will permeate every nook and cranny of the affected area and without professional mitigation, completely removing the odor might be difficult. Restoration companies like SERVPRO have certified fire technicians who understand the properties of smoke, soot and odor and are able to come up with the proper remedy. We have the specialized equipment to manpower to handle a fire disaster that affects a large area. the cleanup process is extensive because every floor, wall, ceiling and items within the affected area need to be "touched".

In Need of Mold Remediation?

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

mold Microbial growth found in a basement.

Mold infestation is always caused by some moisture issue. Whether it be a broken or burst pipe, excessive humidity or an intrusion from groundwater, excessive moisture needs to be present. Most mold calls we receive are either in basements or crawl spaces since these areas are more apt to have a dark, damp environment which mold spores thrive in. The spores are a living entity which need food and air to live. Once these factors are removed the spores will no longer live and spread. Professional remediation is recommended.

Mold is present everywhere and some strains are helpful to the human race. Most are innocuous unless there is an allergy or other factors which could cause some health issues. Nonetheless, is you see visible signs of mold growth it is always best to have them remediated to avoid having the value of your property diminished or cause issues regarding your employees.

SERVPRO is an experienced mold remediation company. We follow all IICRC standards when remediating mold and are available throughout Lackawanna and Wayne counties. We also have a certified mold inspector on staff should an air quality test be required.

Many things can result from a fire. One of them being soot webs. SERVPRO was called by the insurance company to this kitchen fire where food was left on the stove which cause a grease fire sending smoke and soot throughout the home.
The soot webs are a sure sign that the smoke traveled into that room. They are caused by the sticky soot rising and clinging to a corner surface. These soot webs were discovered in an upstairs bedroom meaning that room was affected as well.
SERVPRO will use soot sponges to clean the affected areas to ensure that the homeowner will return to a safe and clean environment.

Using The Proper Equipment For The Job

Thermal imaging technology allows restoration companies like SERVPRO the ability to determine exactly what is wet and what is dry. In the most basic of terms, thermal imaging allows you too see an object’s heat radiating off itself. Thermal cameras more or less record the temperature of various objects in the frame, and then assign each temperature a shade of a color, which lets you see how much heat its radiating compared to objects around it.

Colder temperatures are often given a shade of blue, purple, or green, while warmer temperatures can be assigned a shade of red, orange, or yellow.

This technology allow SERVPRO certified water restoration technicians the ability to concentrate on the wet areas saving time and money by knowing exactly what to address. It also ensues that we do not miss any areas and will also confirm when things are dry ensuring proper and professional mitigation services.

Technology like thermal imaging is just one reason that insurance companies choose SERVPRO as their chosen restoration company. We are emergency services company available 24/7.

Testing the Air Quality

11/9/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Vehicle Call us at 570-235-1646.

The only definitive way to ascertain whether a mold issue is occurring is by conducting testing. SERVPRO employs a mold tester to better service our customers.

There are several different types of test which a professional remediation company can conduct. As a company we employ the use of the following two.

Air Quality testing: By testing the air quality and comparing the spore counts between the area in question and a controlled sample from outside, we are able to determine if an issue is occurring as well as the type of mold present and spores counts of each strain. Once we have a beginning spore count we are then able to begin the remediation process. A post test will determine whether the air is now clean.

Tape Samples: Tape sampling is used when obvious discoloration is seen. This method will allow the remediation professional to ascertain the type of spores present. This method is helpful in determining the difference between mold and mildew.

SERVPRO is the leading mold remediation company. By offering both testing and remediation we are a one stop call. We are proud to serve our local Lackawanna and Wayne County communities.

In The Event of a Fire

11/6/2020 (Permalink)

soot sponge A soot sponge is used to remove soot from surfaces.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency. Step 1: Emergency Contact. The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources. Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment. We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action. Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service. Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs. Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present). The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process. Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces. We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces. Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing. We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the re-storable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment. Step 7: Restoration. Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Removing Odors After a Fire

10/1/2020 (Permalink)

hydroxyl Pictured is a hydroxyl generator which literally zaps the odor molecules and is used as an aide in eliminating smoke odors following a fire.

Restoring fires takes specialized skill. It's not as easy as simply cleaning and repairing. Soot and smoke permeate every inch of the affected area including all soft goods and porous materials. Once the odor gets trapped it will remain and remnants of smoke will continue to be noticeable.

The goal of any restoration company is to restore the property back to preloss condition. That means eliminating all the effects of the fire damage including odors. Walls, ceiling, floors, all furniture, contents (including electronics) and clothing must be addressed or risk having a lingering odor.

Depending on the type of fire, cleaning it improperly will only embed the soot into porous areas causing further damage. All these are reasons to hire a professional restoration company like SERVPRO. We have certified fire restoration technicians and the specialized equipment to restore your property back to preloss condition.

Don't attempt to restore your property. Hire a professional to ensure the job gets done properly.

Extensive Fire Restoration

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

fire damage Soot damage from a single apartment fire. Secondary damage is commonplace and is one reason fire mitigation is a costly process.

Fires are tragic. However when they occur around the holidays they become even more so. They disrupt the lives of homeowners, tenants and businesses and can cause thousands of dollars in damage.
One reason that mitigating fire damage is so timely and costly is that usually there is smoke, soot and water damage resulting from the fire. Here you can see the amount of soot which gathered in the lobby of this apartment high rise after it suffered an apartment fire. Ironically, the actual fire was contained to a single unit but secondary damage to the building was extensive. If this is the damage in the lobby you can imagine what the adjacent hallways looked like.
Smoke and soot will permeate every nook and cranny of the affected area and without professional mitigation, completely removing the odor might be difficult. Restoration companies like SERVPRO have certified fire technicians who understand the properties of smoke, soot and odor and are able to come up with the proper remedy. We have the specialized equipment and manpower to handle a fire disaster that affects a large area. The cleanup process is extensive because every floor, wall, ceiling and item within the affected area needs to be "touched".
Having the specialized equipment and trained personnel is just one reason SERVPRO is the leader in smoke, fire and water cleanup and restoration.

Flooding- A Non-covered Loss

7/30/2020 (Permalink)

water Heavy rains caused this basement to flood. Floating objects in a basement is never a good thing.

Today, with all this rain and a saturated landscape, SERVPRO has had several calls regarding flooded basements. We do our best to attend to each call in a timely fashion with the goal of making the home safe.
if you find your basement flooded, call the water restoration professionals at SERVPRO.

How To Put Out a Grease Fire

3/18/2020 (Permalink)

Grease fire A grease fire which was extinguished by a chemical fire extinguisher. We did the cleanup and restoration.

The best way to avoid a grease fire is to not have one. While you are cooking, keep an eye on the oil as it’s heating. The oil won’t immediately catch fire once it starts smoking, but smoke is a danger sign that it’s well on its way to getting there.

If the worst happens and your oil does catch on fire, use the following tips:

1. If the fire is still small enough and contained in one pot, it is safe to put it out yourself. If it is already spreading to other parts of the kitchen, evacuate.

2. Turn off the source of the heat on the stove. Do not try to move the pot because you don’t want to accidentally spill or splash the burning oil.

3. Do NOT pour water on the fire! Since oil and water do not mix, pouring water can cause the oil to splash and spread the fire even worse. In fact, the vaporizing water can also carry grease particles in it, which can also spread the fire.

4. Remove all oxygen from the flame. You can cover with another pot or pan. Do not cover it with a glass lid because the glass lid may shatter.

5. If you can’t cover it, dump lots of baking soda on it.

6. Use a chemical fire extinguisher on the grease fire. There are different kinds of extinguishers. Not all can be used on a grease fire, but the ABC dry chemical extinguisher is best.

Hopefully you’ll never be in a situation where you have to actually use this advice, but if you are remember to smother the fire with a pot or baking soda and never use water!

Categories of Water

3/18/2020 (Permalink)

Cat 3 Loss This is a Cat 3 water loss because it was a sewer backup in a basement.

A categorization of the level of contamination of water in a damaged structure is required to perform loss assessments and evaluation activities. The category of water contamination must be considered so that the correct procedure can be established for processing water damaged structure and materials. Water damage is divided into three (3) categories.

Category 1: Water that originates from a sanitary source that does NOT pose a substantial harm to humans. Examples include: broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflow, melting snow and ice, falling rainwater, broken toilet tanks and bowls that do NOT contain contaminants.

Category 2: Water contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans. Examples include: discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls with some urine but no feces, broken aquariums and punctured water beds. Also, any water that has traveled through building materials.

Category 3: Water that is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Elderly, anyone under the age of two, anyone with a compromised immune system, respiratory problems or allergies should not occupy the job site until the home or building is safe. Examples include sewage, toilet back-flows that originate from beyond the trap, all forms of flooding and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment.

Ice Dams

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

ice damage Ice dams lead to water seeping into the ceiling of this home in Scranton. Ice dams are problematic and cause some serious damage.

What is an ice dam?

Ice dams are a pervasive and damaging winter roofing problem caused by poor roof ventilation and a warm attic space. Left untreated, ice dams can cause serious damage to your roof, gutters, paint, insulation, drywall, structure and even contribute to mold. Ice dams form when melting snow on a roof runs off and refreezes at the edge of a roof. This condition occurs when the snow is melted by a warm roof, creating water running between the snow and the warm roof surface, then freezing and turning to ice when it gets past the exterior wall and hits a cold unheated roof edge or gutter.

The water backs up and eventually seeps into the inside of the home or business. SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties responds to many water emergencies which are the result of ice damming. Water is an amazing phenomenon and without professional drying can lead to both structural and health concerns over the long run.

Be proactive and prevent your home or business from experiencing an ice damming situation and a costly repair. However, if it does occur call a professional restoration company to ensure you and your family's health and safety. SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties is the area leader in smoke, fire and water cleanup. We are an IICRC certified firm and follow all the recommended guidelines in drying any water disaster. An emergency services company we are available 24/7/365.

Sump Pump Failure

2/20/2020 (Permalink)

When a severe storm hits, homeowners may experience excess water in their basements or the lower levels of their home. A sump pump is an important tool that can help protect your property by controlling water and keeping your home dry.

Sump pumps are typically found in the lowest part of a house, such as a basement, and are usually installed by a professional in a specially constructed sump pit. The sump pumps primary job is to pump water outside and away from the home. There are generally two types of sump pumps: pedestal and submersible.

How to Keep Your Sump Pump in Good Condition

Once installed, consider the following maintenance tips to help ensure your sump pump is ready when you need it. Check the pump at least once a year to make sure it is still in good working condition.

  • Is the sump pump plugged in?
  • Is the power cord in good shape?
  • Is the drain hose connected properly?
  • Is there any debris in the area that could clog the pump and prevent it from working properly?
  • Pour water into the sump pit to test if the sump pump starts up automatically and quickly drains the water.

Since sump pumps run on electricity, consider installing a battery backup to help ensure yours will not fail, even in the event of a power outage. If you have installed a battery backup, during your test of the sump pump installation, unplug the pump to ensure that it will function properly on battery power.

Contact a professional if your sump pump is not working properly.

Finally, consider obtaining optional coverage for water backup or sump discharge or overflow. Many homeowners' policies do not cover water in the basement.

Professional Restoration Following A Fire

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

A soot sponge used to clean fire damage covered in soot. Fire damage requires specialized training and equipment like this soot sponge to mitigate smoke damage.

Has your home or business ever been damaged by fire or water damage? If so, then you can attest to the overwhelming nature of the situation. In many cases, an owner may have suffered a damage for the first time; what follows is typically a survey of the damage. For most owners, naturally their next thought is, “How fast can I return this building to livable conditions?”

Great question! But it is important to understand the risks involved following any type of loss and the steps necessary to remedy the situation.

In the event that a loss occurs, your first responsible step is to contact your insurance agent and file a claim. While your agent may guide you through the process, you will also have decisions to make. For example, do you hire an area restoration company or try to clean up the damage yourself? Although every loss is different, there are a few restoration thresholds to keep in mind.

In the event of a fire, it is critical that the restoration response begins immediately. Whether it is a small kitchen grease fire or a large multi-story event, this is not a job for an untrained person. Fire and smoke damage require a professional restoration effort. Smoke and odor removal should be performed by a certified technician, and these efforts can be complex. (To mitigate the spread of odors, the HVAC system should be shut off immediately.)

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna County employs certified fire technicians who are trained to mitigate and restore both residential and commercial properties. If you experience a water, fire or smoke disaster call us at 570-969-9470.

5 Christmas Tree Safety Tips:

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

A Christmas tree in a fire damaged living room in Scranton, PA This Scranton, PA fire occurred last year at Christmas time. The tree in the middle of the room is a reminder to always take precaution.

Christmas Tree Safety Tips:

1.Choose fresh over cheap and dry. The fresher the tree, the less likely it will pose a fire hazard. Look for flexible needles that don't break, and a trunk with sap.

2. Keep the water coming. The tree stand should contain a continuous source of water and be sturdy enough to resist toppling by kids or pets.

3. Don't choke the cord. Attach only three maximum strings of lights to any one extension cord, then place cords along walls to prevent a tripping hazard. Never run them under rugs or carpets.

4. Trees don't need warmth. Keep the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, candles and even a TV.

5. Not any lights will do. Use low energy, safe lighting that's been certified by a safety testing lab. Don't use damaged or frayed cords.

Winters-A-Coming

11/26/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of several SERVPRO trucks lined up on a Scranton street address a commercial disaster Our SERVPRO team has the resources available to address any size winter disaster.

Here in Northeastern Pennsylvania we are all too familiar with terms like Nor'eastern, Bombogenesis, and Polar Vortexes. In layman terms theses mean freezing temperatures, heavy snow and ice. Welcome to winter or as I say-Claim season.

Winter is typically the "busy" season for restoration companies. There is just a higher propensity of disasters leading to insurance claims.  Over-worked furnaces that cause puff backs, frozen pipes that burst, extreme extended cold spells cause ice damns. Thankfully these common disasters are covered losses which your insurance company recognizes. (on a side note winter is also a great time to review your policy to ensure that you maintain the proper amount of coverage)

If your home or business experiences some form of winter related disaster, know that SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties is available 24/7 to help make it "Like it never even happened."

When events like a bombagenesis or a winter nor'eastern occur, the amount of calls we receive can become overwhelming. One of the advantages of calling a national company like SERVPRO is our ability to partner with other local franchises to meet this demand. SERVPRO has franchises that specialize in storm damage and are available when the demand gets too great for a single franchise.

SERVPRO storm teams are trained and have the resources available to supplement the local franchise in order to ensure that we are able to help as many businesses and families as possible. It is important to us that everyone receives the same quality of service that we provide to bolster the brand. At SERVPRO we are "always here to help"

Thanksgiving Fire Safety

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

A fire damaged kitchen stove and range Kitchen fires are the leading cause of all home fires and Thanksgiving is the leading day.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving is the peak day for all home fires and unattended cooking is the leading cause. Cooking equipment was involved in almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths.

Top 10 safety tips
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

Smoke Damage Cleaning

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

A sponge covered in soot. This soot sponge is a cleaning tool for the removal of soot. This soot sponge is a cleaning tool that wipes the soot clean and does not smear "wet" soot and embed the molecules into the structure.

Restoring fire and smoke damage can be tricky. We receive many calls from homeowners who have experienced some smoke and soot damage and have attempted to clean it themselves only to find that they either made the problem worse or were unable to do it successfully. Many times an odor will persist even after a cleaning if the proper techniques were not employed.

Interesting enough not ever fire is the same. A protein fire (burnt food) is different than say a structure (wood) fire. An oil based puff back from a furnace malfunction is different from a cooking grease fire. Since they burn differently, they need to be cleaned differently.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties employs certified fire restoration technicians trained to identify the type and know the proper mitigating techniques. Having the specialized training and equipment allows us to better ensure that your smoke and soot damage is re-mediated and that no odor remains. The SERVPRO team is trained to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Certified Fire Restoration Technicians

11/22/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of a stove and microwave damaged by a grease fire. They are soot covered. This Scranton home experienced this soot damage from a grease fire. The soot covered appliances and walls need specialized tools to clean.

Did you know that not every fire burns the same? A protein fire (burnt food) burns differently than a grease fire. A structural fire (wood), burns differently than a plastic fire. An oil based puff back from a furnace malfunction is treated differently than gas based puff back. At SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties our certified fire restoration technicians do know this.

Having the proper training allows our team to better assess, identify and clean the smoke and soot damage. If the proper mitigating techniques are not employed and/or the soot not completely removed, a persisting odor will linger. The home will not be returned to the condition prior to the damage, which is always the goal.

So why SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties?- Because we have the specialized training and equipment to clean your home following the smoke and soot damage and ensuring that moving forward no odor will persist. Another job well done.

Winter Preventive Maintenance

11/5/2019 (Permalink)

A picture of a cracked copper water pipe A small crack like this one pictured can cause a large scale disaster. be pro-active and protect your property with these simple tips.

As the Northeastern Pennsylvania seasons change and the temperatures begin to dip below freezing, its time as a homeowner to do some winter preventive maintenance. The first thing recommended is to drain and shut off the water supply to your outside spigot. By draining/winterizing it, you prevent the line from freezing and a possible busted pipe and a water disaster.

Secondly, insulate any exposed water lines with pipe wrap. This extra added layer of protection is certainly worth the minimal cost and effort it takes to ensure against any possible frozen water lines.

Thirdly, if there are any small opening/cracks within the structure which will let outside air flow in, cover them with either some type of insulation or caulking. It only takes a small draft to create enough cold to affect a pipe.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties would rather have your property protected than respond to a water disaster/flood at your home or business.

Soot Damage

10/30/2019 (Permalink)

A blue painted room with soot damaged walls and ceiling from long-term candle use This soot damaged room was caused by long-term candle use. Soot can be a stubborn substance to clean requiring specialized cleaning agents.

We recently received a call from a Honesdale homeowner who had soot damage in a bedroom from long term candle use. She attempted to clean the soot from the walls and ceiling herself but, because she did have the specialized cleaning agents required, unfortunately made it worse. With her attempt she only embedded the soot into the sheet rock instead of cleaning/removing it.

SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was able to help make it "like it never even happened".

A hydroxyl generator (piece of specialized equipment) in a basement to help eliminate odors from a sewer backup. A hydroxyl generator in the Scranton basement to help eliminate the odor from a sewer backup. Specialized equipment sets us apart.

This morning SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties was called to a local school district to assess an odor concern. The key to any odor is naturally removing the source which we determined to be a fish tank in a class room. Apparently it was "cleaned" but the odor lingers.

After assessing the situation our certified technicians recommended that the tank be removed to eliminate the source. After which, we fogged the classroom with a deodorant. Fogging allows the deodorant to permeate all the nooks and crannies of the room as well as the porous ceiling tiles which can retain the smell. The final step was to place a hydroxyl generator as a means to kill the remaining odor molecules to ensure the smell dissipates.

Our unique training and specialized equipment gives SERVPRO of Wayne and South Lackawanna Counties the ability to tackle any odor concerns. if your home or business is experiencing a stubborn odor issue, call the odor control experts. We help make it "Like it never even happened."
